ฮาเยียโซเฟีย หรือ ฮาเจียโซเฟีย (ภาษาตุรกี: Ayasofya, ภาษาละติน: Sancta Sapientia, ภาษากรีก: Ἁγία Σοφία) หรือชื่อในปัจจุบัน พิพิธภัณฑ์อะยาโซเฟีย (Ayasofya Museum) เดิมเคยเป็นโบสถ์ของคริสต์ศาสนานิกายออร์โธดอกส์ ต่อมาถูกเปลี่ยนเป็นสุเหร่า ปัจจุบันเป็นพิพิธภัณฑ์ ตั้งอยู่ที่นครอิสตันบูล ประเทศตุรกี ถือเป็นสิ่งก่อสร้างที่ยิ่งใหญ่ที่สุดแห่งหนึ่งและมักถูกจัดให้อยู่ในรายการสิ่งมหัศจรรย์ของโลกในยุคกลาง[1] จุดเด่นอยู่ที่ยอดโดมขนาดมหึมากลางวิหาร และนับเป็นตัวอย่างที่ดีที่สุดของสถาปัตยกรรมไบแซนไทน์ ฮาเจียโซเฟียเคยเป็นโบสถ์ที่ใหญ่ที่สุดในโลกมานานเกือบพันปี จนกระทั่งโบสถ์เซบียาสร้างเสร็จในปี 1520

สิ่งก่อสร้างที่ปรากฏอยู่ในปัจจุบันถูกสร้างให้เป็นโบสถ์ในระหว่างปี ค.ศ. 532-537 โดยจักรพรรดิจัสติเนียนแห่งจักรวรรดิไบแซนไทน์ และเป็นโบสถ์หลังที่สามถูกสร้างขึ้นในสถานที่เดียวกันนี้ (โบสถ์สองหลังแรกถูกทำลายในระหว่างการจลาจล) โบสถ์นี้เป็นศูนย์กลางของนิกายอีสเติร์นออร์โธด็อกซ์ เป็นเวลาเกือบ 1,000 ปี

อีกชื่อหนึ่งของ ฮาเจียโซเฟีย คือเซนต์โซเฟีย ซึ่งมาจากชื่อเต็มในภาษากรีก "Ναός τῆς Ἁγίας τοῦ Θεοῦ Σοφίας" แปลว่า โบสถ์แห่งปัญญาอันศักดิ์สิทธิ์ โดยคำว่า "โซเฟีย" มาจากภาษาละติน ที่เปลี่ยนมาจากคำในภาษากรีกที่แปลว่า "ปัญญา" อีกทีหนึ่ง จึงไม่มีความเกี่ยวข้องกับเซนต์ที่ชื่อโซเฟียแต่อย่างใด

Mosque of Hagia Sophia Istanbul Turkey

Hagia Sophia (Turkish: Ayasofya, from the Greek: Ἁγία Σοφία, "Holy Wisdom"; Latin: Sancta Sophia or Sancta Sapientia) is a former Orthodox patriarchal basilica, later a mosque, now a museum in Istanbul, Turkey. Famous in particular for its massive dome, it is considered the epitome of Byzantine architecture and to have "changed the history of architecture."[1] It was the largest cathedral in the world for nearly a thousand years, until the completion of the Seville Cathedral in 1520. The current building was originally constructed as a church between 532 and 537 A.D. on the orders of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian, and was in fact the third Church of the Holy Wisdom to occupy the site (the previous two had both been destroyed by riots). It was designed by Isidore of Miletus, a physicist, and Anthemius of Tralles, a mathematician.[2] The Church contained a large collection of holy relics and featured, among other things, a 15 m (49 foot) silver iconostasis. It was the seat of the Patriarch of Constantinople and the religious focal point of the Eastern Orthodox Church for nearly one thousand years. It was the church in which Cardinal Humbert in 1054 marched up to the altar and excommunicated Michael I Cerularius, which is commonly considered the start of the Great Schism.

In 1453, Constantinople was conquered by the Ottoman Turks and Sultan Mehmed II ordered the building to be converted into a mosque.[3] The bells, altar, iconostasis, and sacrificial vessels were removed, and many of the mosaics were eventually plastered over. The Islamic features — such as the mihrab, the minbar, and the four minarets outside — were added over the course of its history under the Ottomans. It remained as a mosque until 1935, when it was converted into a museum by the Republic of Turkey.

For almost 500 years the principal mosque of Istanbul, Hagia Sophia served as a model for many of the Ottoman mosques such as the Sultan Ahmed Mosque (Blue Mosque of Istanbul), the Şehzade Mosque, the Süleymaniye Mosque, the Rüstem Pasha Mosque, and the Kılıç Ali Paşa Mosque.

Although it is sometimes referred to as Santa Sophia, as though it were named after a saint named Sophia ("Sophia" being the phonetic spelling in Latin of the Greek word for wisdom), the full name in Greek is Ναός τῆς Ἁγίας τοῦ Θεοῦ Σοφίας, Church of the Holy Wisdom of God, the Church being dedicated to Jesus Christ, in Eastern Orthodox theology, the Holy Wisdom of God.

The Colosseum or Roman Coliseum, originally the Flavian Amphitheatre (Latin: Amphitheatrum Flavium, Italian Anfiteatro Flavio or Colosseo), is an elliptical amphitheatre in the center of the city of Rome, Italy, the largest ever built in the Roman Empire. It is one of the greatest works of Roman architecture and Roman engineering.

Occupying a site just east of the Roman Forum, its construction started between 70 and 72 AD[1] under the emperor Vespasian and was completed in 80 AD under Titus, with further modifications being made during Domitian's reign (81–96). The name "Amphitheatrum Flavium" derives from both Vespasian's and Titus's family name (Flavius, from the gens Flavia).

Capable of seating 50,000 spectators, the Colosseum was used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles. As well as the gladiatorial games, other public spectacles were held there, such as mock sea battles, animal hunts, executions, re-enactments of famous battles, and dramas based on Classical mythology. The building ceased to be used for entertainment in the early medieval era. It was later reused for such purposes as housing, workshops, quarters for a religious order, a fortress, a quarry, and a Christian shrine.

It has been estimated[who?] that about 500,000 people and over a million wild animals died in the Colosseum games.

Although in the 21st century it stays partially ruined because of damage caused by devastating earthquakes and stone-robbers, the Colosseum is an iconic symbol of Imperial Rome and its breakthrough achievements in earthquake engineering. It is one of Rome's most popular tourist attractions and still has close connections with the Roman Catholic Church, as each Good Friday the Pope leads a torchlit "Way of the Cross" procession that starts in the area around the Colosseum.

The Colosseum is also depicted on the Italian version of the five-cent euro coin.
